Biden’s Debate Disaster: What Went Wrong?

President Joe Biden faced a tough challenge during his debate with Republican opponent Donald Trump. Many now believe that poor decisions by Biden’s top advisers led to his disappointing performance. Critics, Democratic allies, donors, and aides have all shared their concerns.

During the 90-minute debate, Trump repeated many false claims, including that he won the 2020 election. Biden struggled to counter these falsehoods, appearing tired and unwell. Some Democrats are now calling for Biden to end his campaign for a second term and for some of his senior aides to resign.

One insider mentioned, “My only request was to make sure he’s rested before the debate, but he was exhausted. He was unwell.” Others, like major Biden fundraiser John Morgan, believe Biden was over-prepared and placed in a setting that favored Trump. He suggested firing senior aides Anita Dunn and Bob Bauer.

Despite confidence going into the debate, Biden’s team miscalculated. Trump’s recent conviction and Biden’s successful European visits had raised Biden’s poll numbers slightly. A rigorous debate prep schedule was set, with Biden spending six days at Camp David for preparations. His inner circle, including long-time advisers, were deeply involved.

Unfortunately, Biden seemed exhausted, even catching a cold. Critics argue that his preparation should have focused more on a broader vision rather than detailed facts. Biden appeared weak and incoherent during the debate, which concerned many of his supporters.

Earlier this year, some advisers considered whether Biden should debate Trump at all, worried it could give Trump an advantage. Despite these concerns, Biden decided to debate, aiming to control the terms. They chose CNN as the host, hoping for a fairer setting with no audience and moderators who would challenge Trump.

The day after the debate, Biden gave a strong speech in North Carolina, showing resilience. Many Democrats and donors continue to support him, but the damage from the debate was significant.

Discussions are ongoing within the Democratic Party about the future of Biden’s campaign. Maryland Congressman Jamie Raskin mentioned, “There are very honest and serious and rigorous conversations taking place at every level of our party.”
