Iga Świątek’s encounter with Jelena Rybakina proved to be incredibly unfortunate as the Polish tennis star suffered an injury and was forced to retire from the match in the third set, bidding farewell to the tournament in the quarterfinals. On Thursday morning, the world leader underwent medical examinations to assess the extent of the injury. Taking to social media, Świątek explained the nature of her ailment.
The injury occurred during the tie-break of the second set. After a particular exchange, she grasped her knee and subsequently requested a medical timeout after losing the set. She returned to the court with her thigh bandaged.
Unfortunately, the pain was too intense, and Świątek retired in the third set at a score of 2-2. The official WTA profile stated that it was an injury to her right leg. On Thursday morning, the player began the diagnostic process. She addressed her followers on social media, saying, “Hi everyone. You’re probably wondering what happened last night. I suffered a thigh injury during the second set, and diagnostics are currently underway. We will have more information for you in the coming days.” As of now, it remains uncertain whether Świątek will participate in this year’s Roland Garros, which is set to commence on May 22.
Świątek has emerged victorious in two previous editions of the tournament, in 2020 and 2022.
