Jose Mourinho Sacked by AS Roma: A Closer Look at the Departure

Roma has fired Jose Mourinho as the team’s manager because the club is currently in ninth place in Serie A.

Mourinho’s last game in charge was a 3-1 defeat to AC Milan. Roma had won only one of their last six league games, and they were also eliminated from the Coppa Italia by Lazio last week.

In total, Roma won only eight out of 20 matches in Serie A this season, sitting behind other teams like Bologna, Atalanta, and Fiorentina in the race for European qualification. The owners, Dan and Ryan Friedkin, thanked Mourinho for his efforts but stated that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club.

Roma quickly announced that club legend Daniele De Rossi would replace Mourinho until the end of the season. De Rossi has limited coaching experience, previously working with the Italian federation and Serie B side SPAL.

Mourinho, who joined Roma in May 2021, led the team to the Europa Conference League title in 2022. His contract was set to expire at the end of this season, and there had been speculation about his future before Roma’s announcement.

While Mourinho had expressed his desire to stay at the club, recent disciplinary problems and on-pitch struggles led to his departure. He leaves with Roma at risk of dropping out of the top half of the table.

Despite his challenges at Roma, Mourinho remains one of the most decorated managers in football history, having won the Champions League twice, three Premier League titles, and a total of 26 honors in his career.
