Aryna Sabalenka’s early departure from Indian Wells came as a surprise, as she exited in the 1/8 finals. This setback means she will lose significant ranking points to current leader Iga Świątek. The advantage of the Polish player, still competing in California, could further increase. Sabalenka was defeated by Emma Navarro, who secured her spot in the quarterfinals with a 6:3, 3:6, 6:2 victory.
The Indian Wells tournament offers 1000 ranking points, and Sabalenka, second on the list, has just lost 530 points. She defended a total of 650 points from last year’s final, lost to Elena Rybakina. Świątek, on the other hand, is advancing steadily and has reached the quarterfinals without dropping a set in three matches. In her upcoming match, she will face Caroline Wozniacki.
Regardless of the outcome, Świątek’s lead in the WTA rankings over Sabalenka will be at least 1735 points, having been 1380 before the start of the competition in California. If Świątek triumphs, her lead would increase to 2520 points. It’s worth noting that the Polish player is defending 390 points from the previous edition’s semifinals.
Additionally, Świątek is set to remain the leader for at least 101 weeks, until the conclusion of the Madrid tournament in May, unless Sabalenka decides to compete in Charleston, where she is not currently listed among the participants.
