Xavi Announces Departure as Barcelona Manager at Season End

Xavi has confirmed that he will step down as Barcelona head coach at the end of the current season. The decision follows the team’s recent 5-3 defeat to Villarreal, leaving them trailing in La Liga. Xavi, former club captain and midfield icon, expressed that it’s a common-sense move for the benefit of the club. The decision comes after a challenging season with defeats in the Spanish Supercopa final and Copa del Rey quarter-final.

In a post-match statement, Xavi said, “I don’t want to be a problem for the club, but the opposite.” He emphasized the need to make this decision public for the club’s well-being. Xavi highlighted his decision-making process, focusing on what he believes is best for the club, not driven by financial considerations.

The 44-year-old manager, appointed in November 2021, led Barcelona to a La Liga title in his first full season. However, challenges in Champions League campaigns and Europa League setbacks marked his tenure. The current season faced disappointing defeats, including the first El Clasico and a loss to Girona. Xavi acknowledged the mental toll of the job and a sense of undervaluation at Barcelona.

Xavi’s departure comes amid a transformative period for Barcelona, addressing financial issues and welcoming new players in the summer of 2022. Despite a strong start, the team struggled this season, currently sitting third in the league standings. Xavi, ending Barcelona’s three-season title drought, will conclude his contract on June 30, 2023. His significant impact as both a player and coach leaves an indelible mark on the club.
